This beginner boating class will give you the knowledge needed to obtain a boat license and the FWC Safety Certification also accepted in many states. Many boat insurance companies will offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete About Boating Safely. Course completion is now required and licensed in Florida for younger folks, and this course qualifies for the safety card issuance.

  • Know Your Boat-- Types of boats; different uses of boats; outboard, stern-drive, and inboard engines; jet drives.
  • BEFORE YOU GET UNDERWAY-- Boat’s Capacity, Float Plan, Per-Departure Check, Trailering, Fueling, Maintenance & Accessories, Preventing Theft, Lines and Knots.
  • Boat Safety Equipment - Personal flotation devices ("life jackets"); fire extinguishers; sound-producing devices; visual-distress signals; dock lines and rope; first aid kit; anchors and anchor lines; other boating safety equipment.
  • Navigation-- Navigation Rules, Navigation Lights, Night Navigation, Sound Signals, ATONS, Charts, Compass, GPS, Buoy System, Dams, Locks, Bridges.
  • SAFELY OPERATING YOUR BOAT OR PWC – Operating, Prepare to Cast Off, Cast Off, Docking, Tying Up, Anchoring, Operating PWC, Using Ignition Safety Switches.
  • Legal Requirements--Boat or PWC, HIN, PFD, Nav Lights, Penalties.
